About the draft notebooks

Mary Shelley used two notebooks for her main draft of Frankenstein: Notebook A of continental paper, bought at Geneva around August 1816, and Notebook B of English paper, bought a few months later probably in Bath. Her text is arranged in two volumes, not in three as first published in 1818. This two-volume division does not match the two physical notebooks, since Vol. II starts towards the end of Notebook A. This online version follows the intellectual division into Vols. 1 and 2 (shelfmarked MSS. Abinger c. 56 and 57), not the physical division of Notebooks A and B. Some pages of the draft are now lost.
